Why do people believe in a secret illuminati?

I mean if there was some big secret organization don't you think we would know about it by now? And if there is an antichrist or leader of this group wouldnt he have bigger things to worry about instead of getting lady gaga and rihanna to "secretly" represent him?? It doesn't make any sense and I dont know why people are believing this.
