Final Cut Pro Audio Woes?

I'm trying to import a wma file, it comes into final cut successfully, but then I can't here anything despite the level-meter going nearly into the red. I've tried changing the file extension to both .mp3 and .AIFF but then final cut won't even import the file, telling me it can't identify it. Please help.
