Should I tell my friend?

I am gay, and I have a friend that I have known for the past year. The more that I hang out with him, the more that I have been building a crush. He is pretty open minded, but I'm still a little weary to tell him that I like him. I don't want to scare him off and never be able to be his friend. What would be the best course of action?
