Whoever told you to be mean to her is a dumbshit. Compliment her and help her out with carrying things or if she drops her pencil pick it up for her. Show her you would treat her right and there will be a better chance that she'll be interested, but we can't control who we like, so don't blame yourself if she doesn't respond.
