Why are parents and professionals and know-it-alls so against comforting a baby?

Wow! I must be a horrible mother then! My daughter has had a pacifier her whole life, I have fed her while she was sleeping, held her most of her tiny babyhood, rarely ever let her cio, and She would end up in our bed at 5 am every morning till she was about 4 months old.
